Designing My Kitchen on a Budget : Cabinets & Paint
I’m giving my kitchen a complete remodel with a $6,500 budget.
This is my third time purchasing a home where the kitchen was in dire need of a remodel. Honestly, this is always how my husband and I are able to get the home at a more reasonable purchase price. We’re always willing to put in the work when it comes to the kitchen, and this time around was no different.
It took us five months and countless times being outbid to finally find our home in Los Angeles. This is by far the toughest market we’ve ever purchased a home in - and if it hadn’t been for all of our family living here, we would have never considered settling down here. Nonetheless this is where we’ve found ourselves, in a home with an outdated kitchen, a non-working faucet, and a moldy sink.
I should mention we used everything we had in our savings to purchase this home. So this means we’ll be DIYing our way through this kitchen design, and the first thing I’ve started with is cabinets. There was a huge empty space in the kitchen - a complete waste of space if you asked me, so the first order of business was to fill it with more cabinets. More cabinets means more storage.
After installing the cabinets myself, I began work sanding the cabinets (inside and out). I wanted to make sure the new paint adhered so sanding the existing finish on the cabinets was a must.
I started off playing around with a few paint colors before committing to one, and eventually fell in love with Farrow & Ball’s Old White Paint. Now let’s not forget, we are on a budget, so I color-matched it and went about my business. For the kitchen walls, I wanted to achieve a texture of sorts (lime wash to be exact), but in efforts to save money, I attempted a DIY lime wash look. I decided to give the ceiling texture as well, using this method, and I love how it turned out. I’ve created and shared a video tutorial via my social media.
Next on the list was to install cabinet systems - I started with this trash can system. I love being able to hide away the trash can, so that my toddler can no longer play with it. It was quite easy to install and I give myself a little pat on the back every time I use it. I must say, I am really enjoying this budget-friendly-DIY-kitchen-journey, and my next blog will be about the hardware and kitchen faucet I’m choosing.
